Humectants are a class of cosmetic ingredients that can increase or maintain moisture in the upper layer of the skin over a wide range of relative humidity changes and a longer period of time in the product. These ingredients have low volatility, can retain moisture and absorb it on the skin surface, and are a class of skin conditioning agents. Skin moisturizing factors include occlusive factors and binding factors, where occlusive factors are sebaceous membranes or intercellular lipids that have the function of protecting water according to the occlusive nature, and binding factors are NMF components that have the function of binding water and can retain water within keratinocytes or between keratinocytes. Then it is necessary for the design of skin humectants to integrate these two functions as well.
Normal skin stratum corneum cells and cells through lipids and natural moisturizing factors together, together constitute a healthy and complete skin barrier, to ensure that the moisture in the skin is not easy to lose, the skin is not easy to dehydration and dryness, the weak acid environment of the skin surface bacteria, fungi and other symbiotic bacteria are not easy to cause disease. Under low humidity conditions, water is lost through evaporation into the environment and must be replenished by water from the deeper epidermis and dermis. Only an intact skin barrier can keep the transepidermal water loss (TEWL) within healthy limits.
