Microbiology Testing for Cosmetics

Overview

Microbiological testing of cosmetic products is important to ensure product safety and compliance for cosmetic products. Manufacturers are responsible for ensuring the safety of cosmetics intended for consumer use, such as the absence of harmful microorganisms that may be harmful bacteria or other disease-causing organisms. Cosmetics do not have to be sterile, but they must have sufficiently robust preservative systems to deal with contamination by harmful microorganisms. Cosmetics can only be marketed after cosmetic microbiological testing, preservative efficacy testing, shelf life testing, and general microbiological identification.

Specific Services We Offer

  • Aerobic colony count (APC)

This test determines the total number of aerobic bacteria present per milliliter or gram of personal care or cosmetic product. It is performed for 48 to 72 hours.

  • Yeast and Mold Count

This test determines the total number of yeasts and fungi present per milliliter or gram of personal care or cosmetic product. It is performed for five days.

  • Enrichment method for specific pathogen screening

This test determines if no harmful bacteria are present - even in very small numbers or quantities. The product is enriched by growing it in an enrichment broth for 7 days, so if the pathogenic bacteria are present in very small numbers, they will be able to multiply and be detected.

  • Total Gram Negative Test

This test looks for Gram-negative organisms, including:

Antimicrobial Preservative Effectiveness Testing (Challenge Testing)

To evaluate the effectiveness of an antimicrobial preservative in a health, beauty, personal care, or cosmetic product, the product is challenged with a known strain of microorganisms. Personal care and cosmetic samples were tested at different time intervals to determine the survival rate of the organisms. This testing demonstrated the efficacy of the product in stopping the growth of pathogens such as:

  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Escherichia coli
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Candida albicans
  • Aspergillus niger

Samples Requirements

Monitor microbial survival for 28 days. A minimum of 100-150 ml or grams of product is required to run this test.
