Stability Testing

Overview

Cosmetics are a mixture of components that change in nature more or less from the research and development stage, the production stage, to distribution and actual use by consumers. Thus, cosmetic stability is a common concern for developers, manufacturers, and consumers. Before a product is marketed, the manufacturer must determine that the product meets the requirements for safety, stability, and effectiveness in normal storage and for a specified period of time.

Specific Services We Offer

Stability testing of cosmetic raw materials:

Stability testing of cosmetic raw materials

  • Conditions that can be used include room temperature light, room temperature dark, 30ºC, 37ºC, 44ºC, and freeze-thaw.
  • Various physical properties such as microbiology, pH, viscosity, appearance/color, and odor can be monitored.
  • These properties can be compared to control samples. When appropriate, additional chemical tests can be used to monitor levels of active ingredients, e.g. vitamins, sunscreens. Test protocols can be designed to meet specific customer needs, covering a wide range of products and applications.

Appropriate testing helps ensure:

  • Chemical stability
  • Microbial activity
  • Compatibility between the product and the packaging used
  • Stability testing of cosmetic products
  • Samples requirements

Optional testing items

Physical-chemical property changes
  • Chemical property changes include discoloration, discoloration, odor, bacterial contamination, gas emission, oxidative decay, etc.
  • Physical changes: classification, precipitation, sweating, coalescence, gelation, uneven streaking, volatilization, curing, softening, cracking, etc.
Microbial stability
  • Specific and non-specific microorganisms
  • ISO 18416: Candida albicans
  • ISO 22718: Staphylococcus aureus
  • ISO 21150: Escherichia coli
  • ISO 22717: Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Analysis of specific biological microorganisms
Product and packaging compatibility Product and packaging incompatibility, weight loss, flavor, moisture loss, packaging degradation, packaging operation process, etc.

Deliverables

We have a short testing cycle, usually within 5-7 business days, and deliver the results to the customer in the form of a comprehensive report. The comprehensive report includes detailed test data, conclusive analysis and recommendations, and relevant recommendations for product stability.

Significance of cosmetic stability testing

Significance of cosmetic stability testing

Cosmetic stability testing can be defined as the process of evaluating a product to ensure that its key properties remain within acceptable limits. Stability testing of cosmetic products has several implications:

  • To provide guidance to chemists when developing new products.
  • To ensure that the cosmetic product maintains its appearance and image to the satisfaction of the consumer.
  • To determine whether a product has the intended function and is safe to use.

Why Choose Us?

Our cosmetic consultants are experienced in providing services related to cosmetic stability. We evaluate the stability of individual chemical components in the formulations used to manufacture products. We can also evaluate possible synergistic or unpredictable adverse effects of combinations of ingredients in a formulation and assess exposure factors. Please feel free to contact us for any cosmetic ingredient stability testing needs you may have!
